Mate. Yerba Mate, a type of green tea, native to southern
South America, has been a traditional beverage in Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina
since pre-hispanic times. The Guaraní natives drank the infusion from bowls
made from the dried skin of squash or pumpkin.
These gourds are called Mate. The drink was adopted by the Spanish & Portuguese
colonizers as well as the Gaucho. Nowadays it is a staple drink in the region.
The infusion is sucked up, through a metal tube,
(Bombilla) whose wider tip is placed in the gourd. This tip has small holes, which allow the liquid
but not the yerba mate leaves to pass through it.
